Action for Welfare and Awakening in Rural Environment Association (AWARE), which is a non-profit, non-governmental organization, affiliated to Needful Provision, Inc. (NPI) a US based 501(C)(3) status charity, with an objective of working for the uplifting of the downtrodden communities in the rural areas of Anantapur district, and neighbouring districts, which is second most backward area in India. Its governing body consists of two-thirds of women members and its activities are mainly managed and organised by women and the administration is solely in their hands. That is one reason AWARE is mostly working towards empowerment of women in rural areas, where the poor rural women have no say in public matters except managing their families. In spite of having a dedicated team of social animators, many of the projects could not be taken up extensively or implemented on a wider range for want of financial support. AWARE also has development programmes for implementation in urban areas also intended for betterment of lives of street children, aged and the infirm, mentally retarded children and the physically disabled and poor widows.
AWARE is having a good track record of successful implementation of many programmes with whatever donations it could mobilize locally which is very meagre and falls very short of proper funds is a great impediment for its implementation of developmental activities.
Presently AWARE is conducting awareness programmes for adult literacy, vocational guidance for destitute women, arranging old age pensions, preservation of rain water, for prevention and spread of AIDS, and health care including improvement of sanitation, ante-natal and post-natal care, and imparting knowledge of First Aid and Nutrition.
The Association also participates in Government Schemes like AIDS Awareness, Pulse-Polio camps for the eradication of Polio in children, family planning programmes, DWACRA (Development of Women and Child in Rural Areas) and other socio-cultural activities.
The District Water Management Agency of Anantapura District, Government of Andhra Pradesh (State) has funded AWARE, to provide intensive training and capacity building activities, to empower the grass root institutions such as 'Self Help Groups' and 'Village Organizations' promoted by different agencies in the watershed villages. This programme is being implemented in 8 selected villages of Singanamala (Mandal) of Anantapur District.
Mr. D. James Prabhakar is the president of the organization.
