Sobre nosotros

The objective of the Hammer Forum is the medical care of sick and injured children from, and particularly in, areas of war and conflict. The aid is strictly regardless of religion, gender or nationality. The long term objective is to build and upgrade local facilities so that the number of children receiving adequate medical care in their homeland is increased. These local projects are aimed at helping people to help themselves. This is achieved firstly by further training for doctors and care workers during the assignments of the Hammer Forum, and secondly by building up in-patient facilities such as operating theatres, children’s wards or health centres.

Operations and treatment on the spot: qualified medical specialists fly with their teams to the conflict zone and examine, treat and operate on children. Over 1,400 young patients are operated on each year – children who would otherwise have had no access to treatment by a specialist doctor. In addition, the teams instruct local doctors and nurses during operations, post-operative treatment and care. Thus the medical teams provide for the continual training and further education of local staff during their voluntary assignments, to the advantage of their young patients.

Transfer of sick and injured children to Germany: children who cannot be operated on in their homeland by Hammer Forum specialists are flown, by way of exception, to Germany or Austria for treatment. There are strict rules governing the selection of children for this, based on their age and medical problems. Moreover there has to be a treatment centre available in Germany which is free of charge and there has to be a favourable outlook as regards a permanent improvement in the child’s health due to the operation. The Hammer Forum never flies children out for diagnosis. We are very aware of the fact that it is far preferable to treat children at home, thus sparing them from a short separation from their families and familiar surroundings. However, for those children who are flown out, after a thorough check on services available in their homeland, this is their only chance of a cure. After convalescing in host families, all the children go back home again.

Overseas projects: these include, for example, the provision or support of health centres or ambulances for children, operating theatres, intensive care wards, children’s wards in hospitals, specialist wards e.g. burns units, neonatal or obstetric units, hospital pharmacies, radiology, laboratories, blood banks etc., and preventive measures such as school health projects or teaching about female circumcision and similar topics.

On request I / we can give advice to other net participants about humane medical aid for children.
