Qui sommes-nous
Maya Traditions is both a USA Retail seller of Goods made in Guatmala and a non-profit Guatemala Foundation (Fundacion Tradiciones Mayas) based in Panajachel, Guatemala.
In 1988, Maya Traditions founder Jane Mintz began working with indigenous women artisans living in poverty after surviving decades of civil war in Guatemala. She observed that their skill of backstrap weaving was a chance for them to earn a stable income for their families while working from home doing what they were already good at. Maya Traditions was founded to help these skilled artisans succeed and preserve their cultures through access to a Fair Trade global marketplace.
Today Maya Traditions Foundation provides social service and scholarships supported by the production of Fair Trade products and grants from several foundations. We operate under the principles of Fair Trade. Maya Traditions returns a portion of the profits earned to the education and health projects.
Maya Traditions Projects in Guatemala:
• Community Health Project: This program promotes preventative health and treatment of common illnesses through the use of medicinal plants and education with Maya families; simultaneously rescuing and preserving invaluable ancestral knowledge.
• The Maya Education Project: A scholarship program to help pay the cost of education for the children of the women in our groups. Children in primary and secondary school get yearly stipend for school supplies. Those who wish to continue on with high school are awarded with a monthly stipend to help cover the cost of room and board.
• Artistry Program: Collaboration between weavers and designers to create new design and colour combinations. The Maya Traditions production team manages the production process from the purchase of the thread to the finished product. The program projects include the elaboration of cloth dolls and women were training in the making of pine needle baskets. Maya Traditions has completed technical training including workshops in the use of natural dyes.
The Maya Traditions Foundation appreciates the work, skills and contributions of volunteers, who in the past have helped us move forward in our goals and objectives.
Marcelle Renkin is the Director of Development and Volunteer Coordinator of the Maya Traditions Foundation.
