Qui sommes-nous

TABU was founded in 2001 in order to contribute towards the protection of children by raising awareness and supporting projects in Africa which deal with female genital mutilation (abbreviated to FGM). We do not wish to turn a blind eye to this customary violation of human rights by parents and wards. Information is the first step towards eliminating this deplorable custom, which has resulted in irreparable damage to women's health for some 4000 years.

Apart from educating the German public through information and charity events (photo exhibitions, talks and seminars) our work focusses on Kenya, East Africa, one of the lands where FGM takes place. Our work is based on stable, reliable contacts, and we support the self-help project CAFGEM - Community Against Female Genital Mutilation, a registered NGO. CAFGEM is an federation of several women's groups which have been actively campaigning against this harmful ritual since 1997. The women in the project have developed successful strategies in the battle against the self-created and therefore avoidable suffering of the female population in their region. With our support they have already made great strides; in the project region, several villages have publicly distanced themselves from the practice and have organised a social control scheme. This means protection for more than ten thousand female children, a number which is increasing due to the continuing work of the CAFGEM.

The project builds education centres for children and adults in a remote region seldom visited by representatives of the governing party or by financially strong organisations. That is why CAFGEM wants to achieve something for the people here, especially disadvantaged women (empowerment) and children.

Successes:
The high acceptance rate of the projects we support in Kenya, the good attendance at the CAFGEM programs in kindergartens, schools and adult training centres, and finally the permission to carry out genital health check-ups of the girls shows measurable success.

Ulla Barreto is the Presidant of TABU.

On request we can offer other net participants advice, make a presentation and provide up to date information and contacts in the field of our work.
