Sobre nosotros

Koinonia Community is a lay Christian organization with the major aim of promoting community life. It strives to counteract the economic and social inequalities bred by individualism and to promote a culture of peace. It gives particular attention to young children in difficult circumstances, the marginalized and the oppressed.

Registered in Kenya as a corporate body since 1996, the community is involved in various social activities and projects that support the growth of the local society within which Koinonia is based, placing priority on marginalized groups.
Through its child rights based development programmes, Koinonia community serves African children in Nairobi (Kenya), Lusaka (Zambia) and Nuba Mountains area in Sudan.

Activities:
• Rehabilitation: In its quest to serve Kenyan children, Koinonia community implements projects that ensure that children enjoy all their rights through an approach that is focused on three core areas involving the child, the family and the local community. The children are approached in the streets through the rescue centers, reunited with their families of origin when possible or referred to our rehabilitation homes and then reintegrated to the family while involving the community in the entire process. All the children in Koinonia Homes are free to practice the religion of their choice and attend the church they prefer.
• Education: After the rehabilitation process in the homes and the completion of the primary education, some children are offered scholarship opportunities to pursue secondary school education while others access vocational training. The children can access Domus Mariae (a private secondary school started by Koinonia, or Shalom IT Center, an Information Technology institution offering ICT courses, and Diakonia Institute, a tertiary level teaching institution. Youth who have been reintegrated are encouraged to join KOBWA (Koinonia Old Beneficiaries Welfare Association). To support the community where they are reintegrated, KARDS (Koinonia Advisory Research and Development Services) provides training in micro-credit, research, project planning and implementation.
• Talent Development: As well as their academic successes, a number of children and youth from different Koinonia Homes have become accomplished acrobats, jugglers, mimes, actors, dancers and drummers.
• Koinonia Action for Peace (K.A.P.): The Koinonia Action for Peace (KAP) is a new initiative launched by Koinonia Community to promote sustainable peace in various informal settlements and grassroots communities in Kenya.
• Free Physiotherapy Program: In Nairobi’s Kibera slums, we have a centre unique in its operations, catering for destitute children with disabilities. It provides physiotherapy services to physically disabled children within the slum. The initiative has an Outreach Programme where the physiotherapist and the counsellor visit the homes of registered children to follow up on their progress.
• Communications: NEWSfromAFRICA, formerly called AFRICANEWS , is an online publication that offers a monthly package of stories that focuses on peace, justice and reconciliation, the emancipation of women, development consisting of church initiatives and other issues of concern to Africans written from grassroots perspectives.
