About us

The Tshwane Leadership Foundation (TLF) was launched in 1993 and is committed to model innovative social change and a high degree of social inclusion in the capital city of South Africa. TLF is an umbrella organization that comprises 7 programmes and 5 institutions, all working towards healthy urban communities that are socially inclusive and viable, and towards a policy environment that would enable social attachment and human rights protection.

Our vision
We see healthy and vibrant communities flourishing in God´s presence

Our mission
Strengthening leadership and resources for women and girls in crisis, homelessness, inner-city housing, community and economic development, health development.

Our work includes support towards women and young girls at-risk, homeless people, women and men involved in commercial sex work, children in need, people living with HIV/AIDS and chronic mental illness, as well as residents of inner city social housing projects and economic development projects.

Communities:
• Inkululeko Community Centre: Inkululeko ("freedom") Community Centre is focusing on early childhood development. We have two main programmes, a preschool for 60 children between three and six years old and an afternoon holiday programme for Grade 1-5 primary school learners.
• The Potter´s House: The Potter´s House was founded 1993 as the first non-racial shelter in the city, to provide holistic support for women in crisis and their children. It has become a place where women and children are empowered to discover their full potential and be re-integrated into society.
• Lerato House: Lerato House was established in 1998 to provide a transitional residential facility for young girls at-risk in the city centre. We seek to restore and empower 70 young girls per year to take up their rightful place in society, or within their families.
• Akanani Homelessness Centre: Akanani is a Shangaan word meaning "Let us build together". The programme started in 1997 and focuses mainly on outreach programmes to adult homeless people, asylum seekers and refugees living on the inner city streets of Pretoria.
• Gilead Health Unit: TLF offers health support in the city through the various outreach and drop-in centre programmes, assisting people in need through referrals to hospitals, long term care facilities and health education. Our health unit currently manages Rivoningo Care Centre, accommodating 20 homeless people who are diagnosed as terminally ill.
• Tshepo Urban Trading: Tshepo aims to break new ground in empowerment by creating sustainable social enterprises and access to economic opportunities for participants in TLF programmes.
• Isithebe: Isithebe is the Strategy and Management Support Unit for TLF. Its strategic goal is to provide, develop and connect proactive leadership within the organization. Isithebe strengthens and deepens the unfolding work of the entire movement.
• Feast Of The Clowns: The Feast Of The Clowns is an annual city festival.
