About us

The Institute of Water and Sanitation Development (IWSD), established 1994, is a not for profit, non-governmental organisation registered in Zimbabwe as a vocational institution.

The Institute aims at being a pre-eminent regional centre for institutional capacity development in the water and sanitation sector.

Its mission is "to address issues of sustainable development in water resources, waste management, environmental integrity, poverty reduction and gender equity through capacity development."

Projects
ZimWASH: This project addresses the water and sanitation needs of the rural poor in the context of HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe. Its Objectives are:
• To improve the health and livelihoods of 1 million disadvantaged people, particularly people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS and orphans and other vulnerable children, through sustainable infrastructure provision for improved multiple use water services, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education.
• To generate and share information on appropriate technologies and methodologies, including guidelines and tools, that will allow sector agencies, especially civil society and local government, to better develop and support the management of sustainable multiple use water services, sanitation and hygiene in the context of HIV and AIDS.
• To develop the capacity of civil society, local government institutions, community based organisations and households to undertake their respective roles in planning, implementing, managing and caring for water and sanitation services.

Training Services
• National Diploma In Water and Waste Management (NADIMA): A distance learning 2-year course aimed at enhancing the capacity to manage water and waste water treatment plants.
• The Higher National Diploma in Water and Waste Management: The course is a level higher than the National Diploma in Water and Waste Management because it seeks to develop a cadre, well able to manage any water and waste water treatment system.
• Post Graduate Diploma in Water Supply and Sanitation (DWSS): This is a distance learning course aimed at equipping personnel with interdisciplinary skills to appropriately respond to the current water supply, sanitation and hygiene challenges.

Noma Neseni is the Executive Director of the Institute of Water and Sanitation Development (IWSD).
