About us

Zukunftsgedanken e.V is a registered association founded in December 2016.”zukunftsgedanken” means thoughts for the future and thats´s what we have. We support the primary school Koyo, Ethiopia in many ways to improve the learning environment and simplify the access to education. Because the required help is extensive and wide reaching we think about long-term rather than short-term solutions.

In Ethiopia, we work in corporation with the Wako and Wondimu Ecological Development PLC conducted by our friend Wako Wondimu. He is originally from Koyo and therefore is familiar with the locals and culture. From his house in the nearby town of Waliso he provides shelter for us to coordinate the project together and to lift the language barrier between the organization and the locals.

Koyo is located in the highlands of the Oromo state in southwest Ethiopia. Roads and infrastructure are virtually absent.
Koyo School is a primary school founded by the Koyo community in 2001 comprising a pre-school as well as classes up to grade 8. After graduating from Koyo School the pupils continue their studies at Waliso High School about a three hour drive from Koyo.
600 students between the age of 8 and 17 attend the regular classes. The pre-school counts 270 children with the youngest being 4 years old.
The issues are wide reaching and omnipresent. Considering the amount of students the available 9 dilapidated classrooms are just not enough and covered in holes and flaws far away from being a pleasant study environment. Only half of the students can squeeze tightly onto the school benches the rest has to sit on the bare floor. Neither chair nor table are provided for the teachers and the words written on the cracked blackboard are hardly readable.
There is no running water to drink or for washing. The state of toilets and sanitary installations is shocking.
There is a massive lack of essential school materials such as pens and paper. Additionally is the school understaffed having too little teachers for the mass of students. In case of sickness, there is no coverage for the cancelled lessons.

zukunftsgedanken aims at long-term and efficient support for the school. Any activity of the organization is in accordance with the local community and nature. Thus, we try to obtain building material locally and provide labor to the local community to strengthen the bonds and support the whole area.

Projects
• New School building: In corporation with the Reiner Meutsch Stiftung FLY & HELP we’ll build a new school building in Koyo. Start of Construction work will be in September 2018 providing three new classrooms and a library.
• Delivery of tables and chairs: We handed over 20 school benches and 2 teacher desks on the 22 of march 2017. Produced by befriended carpenters in the close by Waliso, transported by lorry to Koyo and unloaded by many helping hands.
