Über uns

Burns Bog has been called ‘The Lungs of the Lower Mainland’. It is a globally unique ecosystem. It filters air and water, keeping carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere by sequestering it in the form of carbon. Burns Bog is home to many plant and animal species, some of which are rare and endangered.

Twenty concerned citizens founded the Burns Bog Conservation Society in 1988. Along with other members of the community, they had stopped a major development. If they hadn’t been successful, Burns Bog would now be under 6 metres of landfill and commercial, residential and industrial development. 2.6 square kilometres were to be scooped out for a deep-sea port.

The Society felt that the best way to ensure long-term protection was to educate people about the ecological benefits of the Bog and to raise awareness about the need to protect it for future generations.
The Burns Bog Conservation Society is a registered Canadian charity which:
• Conducts educational programs including interpretive tours, fieldtrips and summer day camps.
• Builds and maintains the boardwalk in the Delta Nature Reserve (Burns Bog) so that everyone can enjoy the ecosystem without damaging the sensitive vegetation. The boardwalks are stroller, wheelchair and bike accessible.
• Keeps up- to-date with research in order to distribute accurate information about peatlands.
• Publishes educational resources.
• Sends participants to events related to peatland conservation.
• Partners with other environmental organisations and academic institutions.
• Hosts events such as International Bog Day/Jog for the Bog and the Pilgrimage to Burns Bog.
