Qui sommes-nous

Spring of Hope (SoHUG) is a community-based rehabilitation non- profit organisation for children with disabilities in rural areas of Uganda. Spring of Hope is based in Kayunga district, Kangulumira Sub-county. The programme started in August 2004, working alongside another organisation; it gradually grew and developed with the services extending to the neighbouring districts wherever possible. In 2011, Spring of Hope Uganda (SoHUG) was registered as a Community Based Organisation (CBO) in its own right.

Our aims
• Enable the child to reach their full potential in development and independence
• Support the parents to value their child for who they are
• Educate the community to understand and accept the needs of the children
• Provide and facilitate assessment, access to treatment, corrective surgery and equipment

We currently work with 500 children and their families in the areas of education, physiotherapy, raising awareness and income generating projects.
We work with kids that have various disabilities:
• Deafness/significant hearing impairment
• Visually impaired/significant sight problems.
• Learning disabilities, Cognitive Disabilities, Developmental disabilities
• Epilepsy
• Physical disability
We also aim to improve general community knowledge and awareness; helping them understand disabilities, what can be done and we carry out community assessments.

Programs:
• Clinics: Drop in physiotherapy days; Free Epilepsy Medication; Monthly Rural Assessment Clinics; Parish Clinics
• Education: SoHUG has used donated money to pay for school fees, health assistance, and daily life support; Child Sponsorship Program; Training and Mentoring Teachers
• Free Nutrition Support: Giving food supplies; Educating parents; Assessing the child's progress
• Income Generation: Through the Gift Certificate Program we have been able to give a few families chickens, goats and ducks. Our AIM in this project is to help parents and enable them to have a more sustainable income through teaching them new agriculture skills then assisting them with small microfinance loans. Agriculture is the major income generating activity in local communities of Uganda so we want to support parents start mixed farming.
• Home Visits: Monday through Wednesday we carry out routine home visits, where we visit the child and their families. We believe it is important to work alongside the families as much as possible in the child’s development. In some situations we train the parent on developmental exercises and give the child some basic physiotherapy. With other children who are have more physical abilities, we may assist the child to learn how to wash clothes, peel matooke or Irish potatoes, or fetch water. The idea is to enable the child to reach her true potential.
