About us

The Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK), established in 1958, is a charitable, national non-governmental organization whose overall objective is to improve the quality of lives of persons with disabilities (PWD’s). We collaborate with the Ministry of Medical Services, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development and Ministry of Education in service provision. APDK has 4 Regional Hubs that work that work through a network 10 branches serving 37 counties. These branches are located in in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kisii, Eldoret, Busia, Machakos, Embu and Siaya. Most of the Branches are located within the Government’s provincial or district hospitals.

Overall Objective:
Improve the quality of life of Persons with Disabilities through comprehensive rehabilitation programmes using a rights based approach to achieve poverty reduction through mainstreaming for socio-economic empowerment

Objectives:
• To Create awareness on causes, prevention and management of various disabilities with the aim of reducing prevalence and overcome prejudices and traditional believes towards Persons with Disabilities.
• To promote quality rehabilitation services through medical/social rehabilitation and economic empowerment.
• To develop and provide low cost assistive/supportive appliances through appropriate technology to meet the needs of Persons with Disabilities especially in the rural community.
• To network with the Government and other partners to effectively co-ordinate activitiestargeting Persons with Disabilities to minimise duplication of services.
• To promote formation of grassroot groups of Persons with disabilities to increase their selfconfidence to achieve full participation in their communities and attain equal rights.

APDK works towards:
• Promoting access to rehabilitation services as close as possible through community programs that include community based rehabilitation and mobile outreach plus programs.
• Promoting attainment of maximum independence through manufacturing, fabrication, provision of quality assistive and mobility devices (orthopedic and wheelchair pages)
• Promoting inclusive education through training the community on disability, environmental and social barriers that hinder children with different abilities from attaining their maximum potential.
• Empowering persons with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities through training them on entrepreneurship while advocating for formal employment in the private sector and in internally.
