Qui sommes-nous

The Parkinson’s Disease & Movement Disorder Society (PDMDS) is an all India charity organization founded in 2001 by internationally renowned neurologist Dr Bhim Sen Singhal, whose vision was to set up a free-of-cost multidisciplinary support service for PwPs and their caregivers with the aim of improving their Quality of Life.
PDMDS is the leading voice for Parkinson’s in India. Through our activities, we strive to raise awareness about Parkinson’s and dispel the associated myths, provide affordable and accessible information and therapy to all stakeholders and promote the rights of People with Parkinson’s (PwPs) in India.
We started with one community-based support centre in a suburb of Mumbai in 2005, and have steadily grown to more than 60 Parkinson’s Support centres in 24 states all over India.

Our mission
• To reach out to the Parkinson’s community from all corners of India through the development of urban, rural and tribal Parkinson’s support centres.
• To promote public awareness about Parkinson’s.
• To develop resources within the community that can be effectively utilized to support PwPs.
• To facilitate community-based programmes for PwPs in other developing countries with limited or no access to Parkinson’s care.

Our Focus Areas
• Support and Rehabilitation: We offer patient and caregiver focussed educational and rehabilitative services through various free-of-cost mediums. Support Group Centres; Home Outreach Programme; Patient Welfare Programme; Individual Counselling Programme; Tele-Rehabilitation. .
• Rural Outreach Programme: The PDMDS collaborates with local and government bodies to identify people with neurological conditions. Besides the replication of its core activities, the PDMDS conducts door to door surveys and neurological medical camps in order to identify undiagnosed cases in such locations.
• Training of healthcare professionals and community health workers: With the objective of equipping professionals to implement rehabilitative programs for people with Parkinson’s (PwPs) and thus reaching out to those unreached, the PDMDS carries out capacity building training programs and workshops. A range of stakeholders are targeted, such as medical professionals, allied health care professionals, nurses, students, community health workers, as well as caregivers of people with Parkinson’s.
• Healthy Ageing Programme: The PDMDS provides sensitization and educational programs about neurological conditions in the elderly, so as to promote healthy ageing. These programmess are conducted for varied groups and communities in varying formats. Continuing programmes on Healthy Ageing have been designed to include a range of topics like information on healthy ageing, interactive activity sessions on Dance Therapy and Cognition, exercise sessions and information about neurological illnesses like Parkinson’s, Dementia and Stroke. As there is a general lack of awareness about neurological health care, the focus of this programme is to equip the elderly with practical skills, knowledge about early detection of neurological illnesses and also to contribute towards their overall well-being as they age.
