Qui sommes-nous

Dr. med. Klaus Eckert, our first chairman, had good arguments that led to the foundation of Brepal. He has known the country since 1998, not just as a tourist. Many work assignments as a doctor in Nepal have enabled him to understand how the medical system works in Nepal or, better, how it should work.
Klaus Eckert, himself from Bremen, convinced other Bremen residents to help him set up medical aid posts in remote regions of Nepal. From this connection Bremen-Nepal emerged Brepal, our association, which has been recognized as a non-profit institution since September 15, 2011.

Aims
• Promotion of the rural health system in Nepal, especially by setting up health posts in medically underserved areas
• Financial support for medical equipment and staff costs for such facilities
• Support of medical work in Nepal by specialists
• Initial and further training measures for the Nepalese employees
• Development of preventive health care for the rural population of Nepal
• Development and expansion of educational institutions

Projects
• Banjhakateri health center: In Banjhakateri, work was initially carried out in a converted warehouse. The health center was inaugurated on March 13, 2015. Medical care is offered in this building that corresponds to western standards. A sonography device enables abdominal and vaginal sound and helps us to offer good prenatal care. A laboratory is available, and oxygen therapy for common lung diseases can be used. German doctors come regularly to train our medical staff, and operational health camps are possible. A permanent power supply enables us to operate a refrigerator and can thus store vaccines that the government health system of Nepal makes available to us.
• Nutrition: To improve the nutritional situation, we help grow vegetables. In 2012 we hired a 24 year old expert. With his help, we have succeeded in having 85% of households own a kitchen garden after two years. We subsidize the seeds with at least 50%, and we sometimes bring the seeds with us from Germany. So there is more variety and useful vitamins on the plate. We do not use plant toxins or pesticides, ecological cultivation methods are important to us. A demonstration garden is located at our Health Post.
• Smoke-free stoves: Banjhakateri is the first smoke-free village in Gulmi district, i.e. at least 85% of all households have a smokeless stove. Within 2 years we succeeded with the help of the "oven maker" from Munich. The new stoves use 40% less wood to prepare a meal, which saves women and children time collecting the fuel and so there is less deforestation. Protection of the environment. However, it is very important that a smoke-free room is the most important preventive measure to avoid lung diseases.
• Waste disposal: A waste separation and disposal project was built with the help of the employees from "Technology without Borders". The incinerator is installed and burns all waste without leaving any residue. Medical waste can be disposed of cleanly, and people also collect incinerable waste that is disposed of in our facility.
• Coffee growing initiative: The first harvest was in 2017, the quality of the coffee is excellent. In 2018, 29 farmers will join forces to form a cooperative. Land will be leased and 10,000 new coffee plants will be planted. We try to generate new income for the community by growing coffee. So far, the farmers in our village have only grown rice and grain for their own needs. Unfortunately the project ended in April 2020. 90% of the coffee plants were destroyed by severe frost and hail. Other cooperatives also suffered the same damage. There were similar weather problems in the previous year. Climate change is also noticeable in this region of Nepal. We could no longer motivate the farmers to start over.
• School project: Since 1.10. In 2015, Brepal supports the seven schools in Banjhakateri with teaching and teaching materials.
• Biogas plant: We were able to build a demonstration plant at the new health center. We help interested residents with the necessary state applications.
• Health Post at Bigu Monastery: On March 27, 2018, the new Health Post in Bigu was officially opened. We have three beautiful and practical rooms that are good to work in. The center has been very well received, so we will have a second building built in spring 2019.It will give us a better way to care for patients overnight. To improve medical diagnostics, we get a laboratory like the one in Banjhakateri. We also offer mobile camps in the side valleys.
