Qui sommes-nous

The Rwanda Child and Youth Welfare Service supports orphans and other needy children and young people in Rwanda through personal sponsorships. These make possible a comprehensive education (school, vocational training, studies) and thus create long-term economic independence for those affected. In addition, we provide livelihood security and emergency assistance for needy children and young people and their families.
The Rwanda Child and Youth Welfare Service developed from a working group that was founded in 1999 in the Alfter community (near Bonn) to help Rwandan orphans by sponsoring children who had lost their parents due to the genocide in the spring of 1994. Since the founding of our own, registered association in 2016, the entire project work of the Rwanda child and youth welfare organization has been coordinated and supervised by the board members and other active members in Düsseldorf as well as our local partners in Rwanda.

Our mission statement
Child and youth welfare in Rwanda sees itself as a partner for disadvantaged children in the struggle for better educational and life opportunities - both on a global and local level.

Our vision
We dream of a world in which every child has the same chance to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.

Our projects:
• Happy Kids School - preschool in Nyamvumvu (in the Rutunga sector): In many rural areas in Rwanda there are only a few educational institutions and the parents of the children living there usually cannot afford an adequate school education for their children because as self-sufficient farmers, they do not have the necessary financial means for school fees and materials. The board of the association therefore decided in 2018 to launch its own school project in the Rutunga sector (approx. 30 km from Kigali). Starting with the construction of a preschool, the long-term aim - depending on the amount of donations - is to create an education centre for all age groups, in which schooling is offered which is both high-quality and free. While the running costs are covered by child and school sponsorships, other school buildings (a cafeteria, a library, a work room, etc.) are taken over by other sponsors - both individuals and foundations. At the beginning of 2020 the school opened for the children of the first preschool class. The construction of a school kitchen with a covered outdoor canteen for the students of our Happy Kids School is planned for 2021. The aim is to offer a free, healthy breakfast and / or lunch to all students.
Individual projects:
• Laptops: Older pupils and students in particular need a laptop in order to graduate successfully.
• Solar systems: Installation of solar systems for families in need
• Water projects: construction of water pipes from the water point to the house; Acquisition of water tanks for the Gasabo Primary School
• School materials:
• Goats: purchase of goats for families in need
• Mattresses: Acquisition of mattresses for families in need

Sonja Suermann is the chairwoman of the children's and youth welfare organization in Rwanda and Frank Heemsoth and Konstantin Redeker are responsible for the association's public relations.

On request we can offer other net participants advice, give a presentation, and provide up-to-date information and contacts in the field of our work.
