About us
Consciente is an initiative for creative and critical education for all. In our eyes, education is the key to a sustainable bottom-up development process. Since 2012 we work mainly in the department Morazán in the northeast of El Salvador.
Our work
• We are promoting equal opportunities in access to education and to improving the quality of education. Our work is characterized by a high level of voluntary commitment and a strong focus on scientific evidence.
• Our projects are coordinated by a interdisciplinary team in El Salvador, financially supported by voluntary-based associations in Switzerland and Germany.
• Consciente is mainly active in the department of Morazán in the northeast of El Salvador. Morazán has about 200,000 inhabitants and is one of the poorest regions of the country.
• Our work is guided by the “Innovate, test, then scale” approach. This means that we first send our projects into a trial phase in which they are evaluated using scientific methods. This is how we ensure that our work is effective.
Our programs and projects:
Scholarship Program: Access to education for all, irrespective of socio-economic background
• Individual scholarships: Sponsors from Switzerland and Germany enable committed young people from poor backgrounds of Morazán to complete a technical or university education.
Student residence:
• In three residences, young people from poor and remote communities are given room and board so that they can continue their education.
Educational Innovation Program: Improving the quality of education in local schools
• For students: The „Portal Educativo Estudiantil“ contributes to the competence development of students in public elementary school in El Salvador by implementing innovative learning environments.
• For teachers: The „Portal Educativo Docente“ trains teachers professionally and didactically and contributes in the long term to the development of teaching in public elementary school.
• In the comprehensive QUEST project (Quality Education with Salvadoran Teachers) continuing education programs for teachers are being developed, piloted and scientifically evaluated in cooperation with the University of Bern and the University of Teacher Education Fribourg.
Sustainability Education Program: Promoting the discussion of important social and environmental issues
• Through “Education at eye level” we empower young people to strengthen their own vision of sustainable development and become agents of social change. Main topics are: Gender & Violence, Democracy, Environment.
• Health Education: Consciente offers workshops and education on topics related to preventive medicine and personal responsibility in health matters.
