Über uns

Living Positive Mlolongo (NGO) is a non-religious, non-political, community based organization currently operating in Mlolongo and the surrounding slums on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya.

Living Positive aims to improve the physical, psychological and socio-economic status of people who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS and their families. By providing them with health care, education, income generating programs, rehabilitation and counseling, we work to make them healthier, happier, stronger, and more independent citizens.

Furthermore, Living Positive aims to reduce the stigma associated with HIV and to encourage a deep change of attitude towards this pandemic. We believe that HIV can no longer be considered just as a health problem; rather, it represents social isolation in the community and an economic burden to all the members of the affected families. As a result, we aim to improve their social and economic welfare in their communities.

Projects:
Care and support for families affected by HIV/AIDS: Living Positive provides many services for families in the community affected by HIV/AIDS including counseling, individual home visits, health and nutrition advice, providing food and transport, weekly group support meetings for HIV+ women, and psychological support for all the family.

Women´s Economic Empowerment Program (WEEP): Living Positive aims to pull women from prostitution and place them in an income generating program to offer them other ways to support themselves financially. The women are assisted to engage in income generating activities such as sewing, tailoring and bread-making.

Day Care Centre: The program gives children from the surrounding slums care and protection during the day until their mothers or guardians pick them up in the afternoon. These children are provided with basic education and at least one meal a day. Sometimes there is no food at home and this meal could be the only meal the child gets during the whole day.

Kiotani: Kiotani (Swahili for ´Inside the nest´) is our ongoing orphanage project. Three acres of land is being transformed into a primary boarding school. This school will give orphaned and vulnerable children in the community a chance to access a quality education regardless of their socio-economic background.

Sponsorship Program: Through the Living Positive Mlolongo Sponsorship Program you can give the child an opportunity to excel and thrive in a positive learning environment. Living Positive Mlolongo offers not one, but three different sponsorship packages that will all support and cater to vulnerable and orphaned children involved with the Living Positive Program.

Community empowerment and awareness: Living Positive aims to sensitize and build the capacity of the community to address issues of HIV prevention and stigma. It also supports community initiatives to improve hygiene and sanitation of the community.

Ukweli Tours: this upcoming project was conceived in 2013 by a group of local women living in the slums who sought an innovative way to generate income. By bringing visitors into the slums and exposing them to life here, the women are aiming to create awareness in the international community about their living conditions and what it means to have HIV/AIDs in Kenya.
