About us

The Mwelu foundation is a registered organization working within Mathare slums of Nairobi, we are working with a group of forty ambitious, positive and talented young people to help the realize their potential through photography, film production, creative writing and life skills.

Our vision is of a peaceful world in which children can realize their full potential in societies that provide hope, opportunity and respect.
Our mission is to nurture talent of children in the poorest communities in Nairobi by providing training in creative arts and essential life skills. By providing children with a voice and promoting education we hope to break the poverty cycle and violence that exist in our communities

Our programs
• Our activity center is on photography, film production and creative writing but include other creative arts such as poetry. We partner with other organization to carry out community activities such clean ups, peace building initiatives among others. We also run a library and resource center which is free of charge to the community. Recently we have started a livelihoods program in the areas of reproductive health and HIV/AIDS awareness, computer literacy and language training.
• The School Outreach program is a program that we train children in their respective schools, with 3 informal primary schools in Mathare which include, Codman Academy, Maji Mazuri Academy and Mathare Community Outreach- Bondeni.School. Outreach Program trains children as young as 8 years to 17 years old. The trainees are undergoing trainings on photography, film production and creative writing. Considering the gender balance affirmative action we train and work with boys and girls and women and men respectively.
• With strong belief in education, our priority has been to ensure that we retain our members in primary and secondary schools.
