Tax Justice Network (TJN)

About us

The Tax Justice Network (TJN) is an independent organisation launched in the British Houses of Parliament in 2003. It is dedicated to high-level research, analysis and advocacy in the field of tax and regulation. We work to map, analyse and explain the role of taxation and the harmful impacts of tax evasion, tax avoidance, tax competition and tax havens. Our objective is to encourage reform at the global and national levels. We are not aligned to any political party.

The Tax Justice Network promotes transparency in international finance and opposes secrecy. We support a level playing field on tax and we oppose loopholes and distortions in tax and regulation, and the abuses that flow from them. We promote tax compliance and we oppose tax evasion, tax avoidance, and all the mechanisms that enable owners and controllers of wealth to escape their responsibilities to the societies on which they and their wealth depend. Tax havens lie at the centre of our concerns, and we oppose them.

Our founding objectives are:
• to raise the level of awareness about the secretive world of offshore finance;
• to promote links between interested parties around the world, particularly involving developing countries;
• to stimulate and organise research and debate;
• to encourage and support national and international campaign activity.

In particular we aim to:
• promote more local campaigns for tax justice, especially in developing countries;
• provide a medium through which tax justice issues can be promoted within multilateral agencies such as the United Nations, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund [IMF], the Organisation for Economic Cooperation & Development [OECD] and the European Union.

Projects:
• Country by country reporting: An idea originally pushed by the non-aligned movement in the 1960s, and launched as a civil society proposal by TJN in 2003, this idea, most actively developed by Richard Murphy, is now taking the world by storm.
• TJN 4 Africa: Originally launched by TJN in Nairobi, this now has its own independent organisational structure and funding base.
• Global Alliance for Tax Justice. We used to have a core campaigning element, but we decided to spin off the GATJ as part of our long-term strategy to focus on research and advocacy.
• Finance Uncovered: Initiated by TJN, a now largely self-standing and highly successful financial journalism training programme.
• Fair Tax Mark: Now a stand-alone separate project.
• The Offshore Game: Looking at dirty money in sport. TJN-supported and incubated, now with independent funding and staff.
• Human rights: A project in mid-flow. Currently being incubated by TJN but seeing a rapid take-up by others; aim is for this to take on a life of its own, possibly with a dedicated organisation.
• Competitiveness: Our newest project (as of May 2015). We hope this may become among our biggest to date.
• Taxcast: Tax Justice Network´s monthly podcast: up to 30 minutes of the latest global news, scandal and analysis on tax havens and corruption
