About us

The non-profit organisation “Little Angel” was founded in November 2011 to support an orphanage in Kenya and is dependent on donations and sponsorships to further support the Home and its construction.

The orphanage "Little Angel" is located in Likoni, one of the poorer districts of the Kenyan coastal town of Mombasa. 24 children from 3 to 17, whose living conditions we want to improve, live in the Home. In addition, there are school rooms on the campus where additional education is available for other children in the neighbourhood.

For us, it's all about helping people to help themselves. We are particularly interested in children's education because we want to give the orphans a solid foundation for their later life. In addition, we want to ensure that the children have a secure future even after leaving school and the home.

Activities:

• Thanks to donations, living conditions have gradually improved. As of July 2014 there is even electricity and running water! We were able to put in wooden ceilings for the bedrooms (reducing the transmission risk of malaria and the number of bug infestations) and to install a 10,000 litre water tank for drinking water (and gutters). In 2015 we were able to acquire a large property (8,000 square metres) for agricultural use (help for self-help).
• Other future plans are: Agriculture and chicken farming on the new property should gradually make the home self-supporting. All teachers are to be given two or four years of teacher training. So far, they teach using a textbook without knowledge of teaching techniques. Two teachers have already successfully completed the two-year first stage. This training is very important for the teachers and for all our schoolchildren, in order to significantly raise the standards of the school.
• We continue to rely on one-off donations to realize our plans. Monthly home sponsorships (from 8€) cover the running costs of the home and are not assigned to any specific child.
• Older children are to be given access to a post-8th grade school or vocational training. For this purpose, special educational sponsorships (50€ per month) are needed, which are limited to the duration of schooling (4 years) or education (2 years) and are each assigned to a specific child.

Anja Friedrich is a founder member and is on the committee of Little Angels.

On request we can offer other net participants advice, give a presentation, and provide up-to-date information and contacts in the field of our work.
