About us

In 1990, the "Institut für Islamstudien" (= Institute for Islamic Studies) (IFI), Sufi-Archiv Deutschland e.V. was founded in Jünkerat/Eifel by a group of German Muslims. Its main tasks lie in the field of education. The idea was and is to improve the reputation of Islam and to be able to hold out something towards the portrayals in the news media which are often very superficial and negative. We collect and process information on the history and presence of Islam to be able to give details on the whole diversity of this religion and lifestyle. Main focus are modern Turkey and the Ottoman Empire as well as the development of Islam in Germany. With regard to the contents, in particular Tasawwuf, the Islamic mysticism, is at our heart. Tasawwuf in its characteristic form caused by the traditional Sufi-order is the practical and theoretical centre of our work. The Institute for Islamic Studies is the sponsoring association of the convent of the Mevlewiyye under the direction of Sheikh Abdullah Halis Dornbrach.

In addition to this main focus, the IFI offers information about Islam also to many other groups of persons. Due to the fact that the institute is lying here in the middle of the Lausitz, about 100 kilometres south of Berlin, there is no comparable institution in this area. Many school classes like to drop in on us to complete the lessons in school by visits and conversations. In Brandenburg, there is LER - Lebensgestaltung-Ethik-Religion (= planning of lifestyle-ethics-religion) as a new subject and so - among other people - teachers come to us as well during their further education for this subject to get additional first-hand information and what is almost even more important is the fact that they can discuss their questions and comments with convinced, but not narrow-minded Muslims. Our house is also open for all other groups of visitors.

Due to the move to Trebbus in the year 1992, we got excellent long-term room possibilities; the rest of the courtyard, however, had to be renovated first, some parts of the building have to be completely reconstructed. During the past few years, almost half of the planned work has been completed.

To finance all of it, we are running a mail order business with books, fragrant oils, music cassettes and CD's, silk scarves and prayer chains. In our own home printing-works, we issue an Islamic women's magazine. Further funds come from membership subscriptions and donations and through events and courses on our main subjects.

We offer an overnight accommodation for other net participants and can give them expert advice, give a lecture, communicate up-to-date specialist information in the field of Sufitum (and Islam).
