Über uns
Dyslexia Organization Kenya (DOK), a non-government organisation, was started in 2010 when parents and teachers of dyslexic children realized the knowledge gap that existed in teachers.
Vision
A society friendly where dyslexic people of all ages are empowered to reach their full potential.
Mission
To facilitate an inclusive environment that accommodates people with dyslexia through creating awareness and knowledge sharing.
Our Objectives
• To raise public awareness about dyslexia/specific learning differences.
• To provide screening, assessment and intervention service for individuals at risk of dyslexia and/or specific learning difficulties
• To empower teachers through skills development
• To provide support for parents and teachers.
Services:
• Rare Gem Talent Primary School: This institution was started by the directors of dyslexia organization, Kenya, with the aim of providing a solution for learners who have dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties. Majority of children 60% who attend RGTS have dyslexia. RGTS also cares for children with other neurological difficulties like autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy and regular learners. Occupational Therapy is offered to caprimary school offering 8-4-4 Education System situated in Kitengela, Kajiado County on Baraka Road.
• Seminars and Workshops: We conduct seminars and workshops for parents, teachers, and other groups to sensitize the participants on early identification and intervention of dyslexia and other co-occurring learning difficulties. Planned Seminars and workshops are conducted across counties. Occasionally, schools directors/head teachers invite us todays and education committees to sensitize the parents and teachers about dyslexia and other learning difficulties.
• Teacher´s Training Course: As part of attaining our vision and mandate, DOK embarks to launching the Teacher Training Institution for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers. The first students are expected in April 2017. The dyslexia course Accredited by International Dyslexia Association (IDA).
• Mentorship: A fact which many parents, teachers and the people do not know is that children affected by Dyslexia are not slow learners but simply different learners who need a more customized approach to learning. We can confidently state that high rates of school dropout cases can be attributed to Dyslexia. Frustrated, some of these students develop low self-esteem, turn to drugs, early marriages and crime. DOK has created a mentorship programme for these students to network with successful people with dyslexia.
Phillys Munyi is the Director of the Dyslexia Organization Kenya (DOK).
