Mukuru Slums Development Project (MSDP), founded in 2006, is a registered NGO operating within Mukuru slums and other adjoining areas. Our Slogan - Working with the communities in urban informal settlements to improve living conditions of poor and vulnerable groups.

What we do
Children & Youth Initiatives
• Waste Management: The aim of the project is to empower the community and give information on waste recycling. The project has 2 main objectives: To create employment for the youth both directly and indirectly through recycling of waste plastics; To clean Mukuru slums through recycling of the plastics
• Halfway House: Our house targets street children at risk, aged between 5 and 17 years from the streets of “South B”, South C, and adjoining areas within the slums and other informal settlements It has continued to support vulnerable children who cannot access formal education placement due to poverty, HIV and AIDS, child labor and influence of street life.
Education & Skills Initiatives
• St. Mary’s Viwandani Secondary School: St. Mary’s Viwandani Secondary School endeavors to promote affordable access to secondary education within the slum community. It provides a unique opportunity for the poor children in Mukuru slums and the environs to realize their dreams. It provides a unique chance for children to sit for formal examinations, be graded and access certificates. The schools also offers a chance for adults willing to complete their secondary education do so through evening classes after working hours.
• Mukuru Skills Training center (MUST): MUST is a project of MSDP and empowers youth of aged 15-25 with employable vocational skills and also equips them with entrepreneurial skills to run their own businesses while other opt for employment to get first hand experience. Mukuru Skills Training Center is located in lunga lunga village king stone zone part of the larger Mukuru Slums.
Social Support: Social support project works through 4 main activities to facilitate assistance to the needy people of Mukuru Slums. The activities include:
• Networking: MSDP has a good rapport with stakeholders working in Mukuru (Local chief, District Officer's Office and Government Ministries). We also organize stakeholders meeting at least every 3 months for almost all organizations working in Mukuru as platform of networking and learning what our community needs are through CC groups.
• HIV/AIDS support: Group therapy - MSDP has the best support groups in Mukuru for the women and men. Within the support group members are involved in the following activities: Psychosocial support; Forums/Talks; Team building; Skills: Members are trained on various skills on tie and dye, mat makingand scarf’s making and beadwork. These products are sold to earn them commission through profits; Community conversations
• Economic empowerment: Business entrepreneurship; Capital support; Monitoring; Group Savings and Loaning
• Social welfare: Medical support; Transport; Emergency feeding; Temporal shelter support; Reintegration; Referrals – referral letters are provided for services not offered at MSDP; Support for the people with mentally disabilities
