Über uns

CENWOR, a non-governmental, non-profit organisation, was founded in 1984 by a group of academics, researchers and activists who were involved for several years in research and action-oriented programmes relating to women. The activities of CENWOR are implemented by a board with expertise in the areas of education, economics, sociology, law, political science, management, psychology, statistics, medicine and information and communication. Field researchers, facilitators, resource persons and a small professional and administrative staff assist them. CENWOR also has an Advisory Council that provides professional inputs to its activities. CENWOR receives financial support from donor agencies in Sri Lanka and overseas. CENWOR has four main programmes:

- Policy and Action Oriented Research: CENWOR conducts research in the following areas: poverty, education and training, health, violence against women, economic participation, media, social change.

- Information and Communication: The core activities of the information programme include documentation, data base development, dissemination of information through publications, videos, workshops, seminars, conferences and the Internet. It also seeks to provide email and Internet connectivity to women's groups in rural areas and to establish and popularise tele-centres to enable women to access information.

- Training: Orientation/training programmes on gender issues for policy makers, administrators, development personnel, educators and the community; legal literacy programmes at community level; training of facilitators for functional literacy programmes in state and non-governmental agencies; bridging the gap in vocational information between girls in schools and training and employment agencies; awareness raising on reproductive health issues; orientation in social mobilisation approaches and group dynamics for community change-agents.

- Advocacy, Lobbying and Networking: CENWOR engages in advocacy and lobbying: to implement the provisions of CEDAW, the Women's Charter (Sri Lanka), the UN Beijing Platform Action and the National Plan of Action; to change laws, respect human rights and encourage political participation; on issues and concerns of overseas migrant women workers. CENWOR joins campaigns against gender based violence. CENWOR networks with local NGOs and community based organisations, regional NGOs and networks. It maintains close links with the National Committee for Women and government departments.

For other net participants we can offer expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, deliver a lecture and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
