About us
“Women and Life on Earth” has its roots in the women’s, ecology and peace movements of the eighties. Almost three decades later, it has been revived as an international internet project. We have been a non profit-making organisation since the beginning of 2004.
In March 1979 the Three Mile Island accident in Pennsylvania, at that time the worst ever nuclear plant accident, shook the American public. Women from the north east of the USA who were active in various environmental and peace organisations came together in August under the name "Women and Life on Earth" and defined their common objectives and ideas.
The actions of Women and Life on Earth met with a strong response. 600 women from the north eastern states got together at the conference “Women and Life on Earth: Ecofeminism in the Eighties" at the time of the spring equinox of 1980. Maria Mies reported this in her book “Ecofeminism”.
The women of the German association celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Conference in Berlin in March 2005.
Women and Life on Earth has been under construction since 1999 and is supported by an international advisory body consisting of female peace and ecology activists from five continents.
In the course of the Kosovo war which broke out shortly afterwards, the network sprang up spontaneously and began to mushroom. A worldwide exchange of news and messages started up between women’s and citizens’ groups in Serbia and Kosovo, and European and American women. As a continuation of networking ideas a website was created, which has been online since February 2003.
Women and Life on Earth was based in Berlin from March 2002 to October 2008. The non profit-making organisation "Women and Life on Earth, Frauen in internationaler Zusammenarbeit für Frieden, Ökologie und soziale Gerechtigkeit e.V.“ was founded in September 2003.
