About us
CARE was founded in the USA in 1945, in order to relieve hunger and distress in Europe by sending over a million CARE parcels. Today, CARE can fall back on this experience and the resources of a modern, international aid organisation. Independent of political opinion, religious attachment or ethnicity, we speak up for the suffering, the needy and the disadvantaged throughout the world.
Task: The focus of our work is on the reduction of poverty worldwide. Poverty is indeed insuperable as long as human life is in acute danger. That is why CARE brings immediate and effective aid in areas affected by war or catastrophe, providing food, clothing and emergency accommodation, preventing the outbreak of epidemics by the provision of clean drinking water and medicines. For those who have lost everything, CARE makes a new start easier with its reconstruction program.
Our long-term development projects tackle the causes of poverty. They make lasting changes in the living conditions of the poorest by facilitating education and vocational training, creating new earning opportunities, improving nutrition and health.
CARE speaks emphatically for the poor as their advocate, criticising and reducing disadvantage in any form. We strengthen self-help with projects, advice and aid, and support the development of civil society and democracy. We campaign for human rights by means of education and publicity – in our own country, at international conferences, as advisor to the United Nations and as a member of action alliances and worldwide campaigns. We pay special attention to minority and socially excluded groups.
The effect of projects should still be evident after the aid finishes. CARE involves its participants and local partners from the beginning, in the planning and implementation of its projects, thus ensuring that supporting measures meet the real needs of the people.
CARE Deutschland-Luxemburg is a member of CARE International, a federation of twelve independent CARE organisations in America, Asia and Australia. Coordinated by a common General Secretariat in Brussels and supported by country offices as well as thousands of local workers, we reach people in more than 70 of the poorest nations.
Since its founding in 1980, CARE Deutschland-Luxemburg has been supported by people sharing our vision: of a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, in which poverty has been conquered and people live in dignity, peace and security. Though private donors contribute greatly to success in our work, national governments, the European Commission, UN organisations, companies and trusts also build an important basis of sponsors without whom our aid program would not be possible.
On request we can offer other net participants advice, make a presentation, and provide up-to-date information and contacts in the field of our work.
