About us

Monika and Michael Höhn, together with Nicaraguan friends, launched the Ometepe Project at Easter 1993. It has been supported by an Initiative Circle of voluntary workers since 1995. The project is sponsored by the congregations of the „An der Agger” evangelical church district. On the Nicaraguan side, the Ometepe-Project Nicaragua (POA = Proyecto Ometepe Alemania) is run by a team of several people.

Ometepe is a South American Indian name. It is also the name of the largest of the many islands in Lake Nicaragua, which is fifteen times the size of Lake Constance. The lake lies in the south of Nicaragua, one of the world’s poorest countries. Since the beginning of the project, our work has focussed on health and education.

Health projects:

• Support for more than 1000 malnourished children.
• Nutrition and cooking seminars in schools.
• The building of stone houses, using building elements which utilise plastic bottles.
• The building of latrines.
• Help with the financing of a credit cooperative for smallholders.
• Support for the “Clinic”, the ambulance and the dentist in Santo Domingo.
• Physiotherapy for disabled children and their mothers.

Education projects:

• Support for the pre-school and the school
• Alphabetisation
• Library in Altagracia
• Sponsoring for undergraduates

Women’s projects:

• Fence project
• Prevention of violence
• Psychological care
• Micro credits for women
