About us
Sudan is one of the poorest countries in the world. After the civil war, which ended with the peace agreement of 2005, refugees returned to their ancestral home, which had hardly any infrastructure, very little health care and a poor school system. The development project MiakWadang was set up in 2007, financed and implemented by the Austrian organisation of the same name. The project concentrates on villages in the Melut district, in the upper Nile province of southern Sudan.
"MiakWadang" means “future“ in the Dinka language. MiakWadang combines resources from Austria with the Dinka’s wish for self dependence, in order to give them a future again, and a chance to live in dignity. MiakWadang is based on partnership – person-to-person, heart-to-heart – in mutual respect and esteem.
MiakWadang bears in mind the UN Millenium Development Goals, striving to: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV Aids, malaria and other diseases, ensure environment sustainability and build a global partnership for development.
In real terms this means helping the people in the target area to rebuild their country and have worthwhile life prospects.
With these aims in mind, the MiakWadang project is based on five pillars:
• Health: medical training and hygiene measures as well as improvements in the drinking water situation
• Agriculture: supplying tools for simple gardening and farming, developing animal husbandry
• Education: appointing teachers in the villages and building schools
• Economy: microcredits to stimulate the development of the economy
• Culture and art: production and marketing of traditional Dinka women’s jewellery, art work with children
