About us
Art for Humanity is a non-profit organisation, founded in 1988 and based in Durban/South Africa, which engages with cultural production, specifically in the visual arts, to promote human rights awareness regionally and globally. The organisation focuses on the creation of fine art print portfolios, in collaboration with the participating artists, poets, endorsers, exhibitions, publications, billboards and research projects which advocate various human rights issues in South Africa, across Africa and internationally.
Projects:
- Dialogue among Civilisations: Collaboration between artists and poets from Africa and those countries who participated in the 2006 Soccer World Cup. The participants were invited to create work on the theme of identity, land, object and belief. Art and Poetry inspire dignity, respect, pride, and freedom of expression, imagination, recognition of the individual, creativity, excellence and human rights.
- Art & Social Justice Conference: The Durban University of Technology and Art for Humanity hosted a three day international conference on Art and Social Justice, which aimed to arrive at a concrete set of resolutions which can be developed into a policy document about the role of the arts in effecting social change, cultural development and equity.
- Women for Children: Art for Humanity (AFH) wishes to raise awareness around the issue of children’s rights and to inspire a sense of “moral ownership” and social responsibility towards the rights and welfare of children.
- Break the Silence: Art for Humanity (AfH) initiated the Break the Silence HIV/Aids print portfolio in 2000, with the purpose to instill a greater sense of social responsibility towards the pandemic and to those who are infected and affected by the disease.
- Real Stories Gallery (RSG): Partnership programme between AfH and RSG,which aims to bring about moral upliftment and to encourage human rights advocacy regarding HIV/AIDS in society through the various art forms.
- Pima project: collaboration of innovative medical technology and art advocacy.
- Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) International Print Portfolio: It represents an artistic commitment to the spirit and values espoused in the principles of international human rights.
- AfH-workshops with school learners and teachers: making children aware of the different rights held by all humans while presenting them with methods on how they could protect themselves against HIV and social injustice and conduct themselves with dignity and respect.
