About us
Our association that advocates intercultural exchange and global justice exists since 2012. We organize a South-North volunteer service that attempts to make the term of service for the volunteers, sent every year by our partner structures in Ecuador, Mexiko and Rwanda, as enriching and interesting as possible.
But by now we have become much more: an increasingly politically active association which wants to resolutely oppose racism and postcolonial structures. Herein we consistently try to generate attention for these topics with various forms of action and thus encourage contemplation. Because only when we manage to sensitize people for institutional racism our volunteer service makes sense in the long run. For that purpose, we have two committees that are in charge of the political work and the organization of the voluntary program. When we bring volunteer service and political work together, we can succeed in overcoming borders.
The association “Zugvögel – Grenzen überwinden e.V.” perceives itself as a political organization which addresses post-colonial – i.e. since colonial times historically evolved – imbalances of power.
The heart of our association are the regional groups. They look for host families and projects in their region and accompany the volunteers that work in projects nearby. The regional groups also conduct donation and information events concerning the program or other topics in relation to development politics.
Laura Nieweg is a Board Member and an External Communication Manager at Zugvögel – Grenzen überwinden e.V..
