About us
The International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also called the Hare Krishna movement, is the contemporary branch of the thousands of years-old Vaishnavism, one of the three mainstreams of Hinduism. ISKCON is a cultural and religious movement offering an opportunity to learn, study and practise the Vedic knowledge.
Since 1966, ISKCON has been acting throughout the world as a branch of the Hare Krishna movement, its main objective being to make people aware of their identity as the servants of God, thus contributing towards a respiritualisation of the Earth and enabling all creatures to have more hopeful future prospects.
The founder of ISKCON, Shrila Prabhupada
In 1965, after a sea voyage from Bombay, Shrila Prabhupada, pupil of Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, reached New York almost penniless. His mission was to bring the message of Krishna consciousness to the western world. Due to his incomparable devotion, erudition and authenticity, he is a role model, teacher and an important source of inspiration for millions of people. He founded 108 centres in 49 countries, took on thousands of pupils and brought the message of Krishna consciousness to millions of people. At the same time, he wrote about 60 books with interpretations and explanations of the Vedic texts.
Today, the Hare Krishna movement is led by an international council called the Governing Body Commission, or GBC.
The GBC committee heads ISKCON internationally, in that it debates basic questions of a spiritual nature, works out social guidelines and takes decisions on basic principles. However, the individual national and regional ISKCON associations, which were established there according to their respective legal, cultural and social circumstances, determine the form of these guidelines. Thus the principle of subsidiarity applies: only issues which cannot be settled locally or which are more appropriately dealt with supraregionally are governed from the centre.
In Germany, too, ISKCON is organised according to German law. There are local Hare Krishna centres which are self administered, and a German / Austrian umbrella association, the ISKCON Deutschland-Österreich e.V.. ISKCON Wiesbaden – Hari Nama Desh – is one such local group.
