About us

Street Child Germany is a non-profit organization founded in 2015 and based in Nuremberg, whose aim is to provide educational opportunities for children in need of help. As a member of the International Street Child Network, we can look back on almost 10 years of experience.
Together with Street Child UK (founded in 2008) and other Street Child organizations in many European countries and the US, we have already helped more than 100,000 children in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria, Nepal and soon in Sri Lanka.

Our work
We do this with a multidisciplinary approach, which includes, in particular, the basic aspects of education and paid employment, combating poverty, hunger and economic exclusion. In practice, we implement this primarily through our program to develop small family businesses and to support and build rural schools.
In addition to this core work, we have been able to put our expertise to work even in crisis situations. During the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone and Liberia, for example, we equipped more than 20,000 Ebola orphaned children with emergency products and found carers for them.
An important portion of the donations for our projects is collected each year through the Sierra Leone Marathon, which first took place in 2012 and has since established itself with more than 200 participants per year. In addition to private individuals, company teams can also participate here.

What we do
• Child protection: We work to get children off the street, away from danger, and help them to go to school instead. Through a process of counseling and mediation, our teams work to strengthen the child's family ties - starting with visiting family members and reuniting them with the children.
• Education: We work with village communities to build schools, train teachers, convey the importance of education, and ensure that all our solutions are sustainable in the long term. Building schools in remote villages is the core of our education work. Street Child is also working on improving the quality of schools. In Sierra Leone, we have built quality classrooms to reduce overcrowding in secondary schools - in Liberia we are working to improve the quality of education in rural schools. We also train teachers to improve the quality of teaching. Street Child also trains and supports communities in the administrative tasks of their schools. Street Child helps schools pay for teachers and provide education costs by helping village communities increase their income. Since 2013, we have supported more than 100 education authorities with agricultural subsidies and technical support in the development of rice farms and seed bank programs, using proceeds from the harvest to cover education costs.
• Income Support: We support low-income families with a tailored package to help them escape extreme poverty and pay their children's school fees. In addition to a financial contribution, we also give them an in-company training and create a business plan together with them. They receive weekly advice and participate in a savings plan.
• Children in Need: Every emergency situation, whether war, health crisis or natural disaster, is different and brings with it individual challenges. However, in every situation we do everything we can to protect children and education in and after emergencies. We always place local organizations and communities at the centre of our actions.
• Research: As a development organization, Street Child also conducts research in the countries where we work, in order to best organise and implement our projects and so that we can better understand the problems of the children and families we work with.
