About us
Kikandwa Environmental Association (KEA) is a community based development organization founded in 1999 with a purpose of addressing rural development issues and natural resources management. KEA was born out of the need to address the alarming low levels of agricultural productivity, high level of food insecurity, low income in the rural communities in addition to protecting natural resources against rapid degradation. It also focuses on eradication of illiteracy and technology innovation.
Vision
Improved environment and natural resources (ENR) for sustainable development
Mission
To contribute to sustainable development, thereby improving the livelihood of the vulnerable rural communities through increased agricultural productivity and natural resources management practices
Achievements and activities
• We established a parents school (KEA Green Hill Education Centre) which has grown to an enrollment of 220 this year with good grades and no failures at all.
• We have contributed to the on-going establishment of the Health Centre II at KEA field office.
• We have established key partnerships with various local, national, regional and international agencies which have enabled us to reach thus far.
• In Natural forest conservation our innovation of ½ + ½ acre has so far attained 30 acres out of our target of 1,000 acres in Mityana District owned by individual farmers.
• We have established a Community Innovation Resource Centre which is providing vital information and training of community members in computer literacy and providing secretarial services.
• Food security has greatly improved in the focal parish (Bbambula) where former impoverished and hungry peasants are now food sellers. Fruits such as mangoes, avocado, Jack fruits and vegetables are now very abundant in the Sub County due to our interventions. Integrated crop production with livestock rearing has greatly contributed to the welfare and livelihoods of the families in the project area.
• Lake Wamala in Danger: KEA was the pioneer to start the campaign and advocacy highlighting at local, national and international forums, the continued deterioration of Lake Wamala through shrinking in size, contamination from fish landing sites, poor fishing methods, encroachment deforestation and siltation.
• Lukuga Forest reserve: KEA spearheaded the campaign and advocated for the replanting Lukuga Forest reserve in 2005 which is now replanted as a result.
• We have participated in the UN Conference for Sustainable Development (Rio +20).
• Participated in exchange visits on agriculture and food security in USA, Kenya and other parts of the country.
