About us

Esperanza Verde, founded in 2010 by Olivia Conrads & Douwe Bakker, is a conservation project in the Amazon basin of Peru, consisting of both wildlife rescue and rainforest protection. The projects now owns 180 hectares of rainforest, named ‘Selva Dormida’. By working closely with the local communities, we hope to protect a larger area in the future.

Esperanza Verde needs the support of volunteers. Construction of animal enclosures, reforestation, and animal caretaking are some of the key responsibilities of volunteers.

Projects:
• Building the Wildlife Rescue Centre: The Wildlife Rescue Centre of Esperanza Verde aims to provide shelter for dislocated native animals. Most of these animals are confiscated from the illegal trade, and some have been abandoned by previous owners once they were deemed unfit as pets. At the centre animals will be able to live in their natural environment, some in large enclosures and others in semi-captivity, depending on their behavior and ability to live peacefully with the other animals at the centre. Animals that are identified as eligible for rehabilitation and reintroduction will be transitioned to a rehabilitation and reintroduction site, with the end goal being a release into the wild
• Reforestation: At Esperanza Verde we have a tree-nursery for growing seeds and seedlings of wood and fruit trees for reforestation in different parts of the forest ‘Selva Dormida’.
The aim of this project is to preserve the existing natural trees and replace the large number of wood trees that have already been felled in the area. We are planting a combination of native wood, and fruit trees.
