About us
KUBIS is a society for culture, education and social management, founded in 2004.
The aim of the society is to improve international understanding, especially by:
• offering immigrants help with upbringing and education in the fields of language, cultural understanding and job qualification.
• promoting the equalisation of and cooperation between different cultures.
• improving the living standards if immigrants by teaching them about consumer protection.
• developing and carrying out social, educational and cultural offerings.
Activities:
• advising and assisting women with job applications and dealing with official matters.
• improving the image of certain districts of the town of Wiesbaden.
• supervising and continuing successful projects in the West End of Wiesbaden.
• strengthening civic involvement.
Achieving these aims involves working within the framework of Urban District Management, which is still financed by funds left over from the Social City Programme. This programme ran from 2000 to 2010 and was aimed at upgrading the inner city district of the West End. Among the development objectives of Social City are improved living conditions and the maintenance of affordable housing, the increase of green and open spaces, the improvement of the traffic situation, development of industry by German and foreign firms, as well as the increased job and training opportunities for school leavers. Since this programme came to an end, Kubis has tried to continue to fund the current very successful projects.
Projects.:
• ”Katip”: reading and writing service. Assistance with official forms, government offices etc.
• Organisation of the annual Culture Days.
• ”Hallo...and welcome to Wiesbaden”: this is a project aiming to establish a welcoming attitude, helping new immigrants to settle into the community.
• Primary school sponsors; this involves homework supervision and language learning for primary school children with an immigrant background. Kubis runs this project in cooperation with the Evangelical church and the Wiesbaden Office of Migration and Integration.
Further projects supported by Kubis:
• Mercator Trust: one of the projects of this Trust is a remedial education programme for children and juveniles. This is a national initiative for the improvement of young immigrants' language and technical skills. Twice a week two students supervise school pupils in rooms belonging to Kubis.
• Conflict mediation: trained mediators from Kubis offer conflict management courses in the West End district, free of charge.
• “Leselaster”: story-reading project in kindergartens and child care centres in the West End.
