About us

SeaCology is an international environmental protection organisation dedicated to the protection of islands and their special island cultures. The organisation acts on the assumption that islands have a particularly rich flora and fauna, which is as the same time threatened because of the introduction of non-native plant and animal species and due to a rise in sea level caused by global warming.

SeaCology was founded in the USA by Ken Murdock and the ethnobotanist Paul Alan Cox in 1993. The headquarters are in Berkeley (California). There has been a German branch “SeaCology Germany” with offices in Berlin since 2007. There are further national organisations in Japan, England, Scandinavia and Israel.

SeaCology works directly with the island inhabitants and tries to find win-win solutions whereby the environment is protected and the inhabitants have an adequate standard of living e.g. by building a school, a kindergarten or a solar energy plant.

Projects:
• Madagascar, Ambolobozo and the Ramada Islands National Park: in Ambolobozo, in NW Madagascar, SeaCology funded the building of a 2-classroom school. In return, the villagers supported the protection of the Ramada Islands National Park, which has a large reservation for the endangered blue-eyed lemur, from destruction by logging or poaching.
• Atitia Center on the island of Moorea, French Polynesia: in 2008, Seacology funded the building of this centre, which conveys Polynesian culture and individual ecological responsibility. Unfortunately there was not enough accommodation nearby to enable children from the surrounding French Polynesian islands to stay overnight there. We decided to support the building of the necessary facilities, and now summer camps can take place in the Atitia Center on Moorea.
• Bahamas, Abaco: in Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park (PCLSP) and in Fowl Cays Nationalpark, SeaCology has financed signposting and a small cabin giving information about the parks and their maintenance.
• SeaCology USA provides tours for members and other interested parties, which are as environmentally-neutral as possible and which generally include one or several project viewings. They include diving and land expeditions, often with remote, adventurous scenery.
