About us
Friends of Zambia (SFV) is a non-profit organisation based in Jesteburg, Germany.
Our aim is to offer help in cases of severe humanitarian shortcomings, especially in the areas of health care, education and training, by building up and supporting suitable projects in Zambia. We take care that our projects offer long-lasting help. The poorer social strata of Zambia should benefit, mainly women and children. One of our objectives is helping people to help themselves.
Projects:
• AIDS prevention and AIDS clinic: our own drama group carries out education campaigns which impart important knowledge. Chreso employs trained »Streetworkers« who cycle round the urban districts, going from door to door to inform people about the information events as well as to test them for HIV.
• Building wells
• GOCA School (Lusaka): the first stage of construction of our school in Lusaka was inaugurated in 1998. Since that time, the school has been running with great success. Further buildings were occupied in 2005.
• Relief: it is impossible to list all the goods we have sent, e.g. wheelchairs, an operating theatre for a hospital, large amounts of medicines and dressings, a water supply plant for a hospital, a large generator.
• Mobile clinic: a core area of our work is building and maintaining a mobile health clinic which offers treatment and sickness prevention in the slums of Lusaka and in nearby villages. Acute illnesses are attended to, but probably even more important is sickness prevention.
• Mubuyu School: we have been running this school since 2003. It stands in a picturesque setting on the shores of Lake Caribou. The school consists of around 15 buildings such as a teachers' house, an assembly hall, a kitchen, boarding houses and classrooms. As well as a 4-year mixed primary school with approx.100 pupils, there is a girls' secondary school with boarding facilities, The girls can achieve their university entrance examination from here. The building was subsidised by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
• Social Centre: in the years 2000 to 2001 we built a Social Centre in Lusaka, which offers many social services to this day. The activities of the Centre focus on vocational training, literacy courses and other adult education as well as advice on AIDS.
• Caring for orphans: in 2003 we built a house in the Chongwe district (about 40 km from Lusaka), which cares for orphans. They do not live there, but come in after school to do their homework and receive a meal.
• »Fountain Gate« children's village: this was opened in 2009. It lies about 30 km east of Lusaka and exclusively accommodates AIDS orphans. The establishment includes a school, a vocational training facility and an agricultural teaching centre.
