About us
Our ukrainian association "Saving of Agro Biodiversity in Carpathian Mountains" is willing to keep culture alive here in Zakarpattia. The connection between nature and humans in a sence of win win philosophy is the culture we are talking about. With the help of lokals and many volunteers from over sea, we maintain some of the most rare breeds in Europe. We try to teach how to integrate some of the breeds into daily live again. Except the Hucul Horse programm is willing to reintroduce domestic individuals into the wilderniss again.
The most impressiv and most rare domestic animal in europe is for shure the Carpathian buffalo, this mystical animal is not fitting in any economic or industrial calculation and requiers from his owner empathic listening and symbiotic knowledge. Out of all individuals existing in Ukraine (63 at summer 2012) we saved alreaddy 30 from butcher. On our rescue station called "Saldobosch" in the village Steblivka Chust-Region we host 25 at the moment.
The main aim of SATrans (Saving of Agro-Biodiversity inTranskarpattia) is the Saving of Agrobiodiversity in the Carpathian Mountains. We are a non-profit NGO, connecting scientific expertise with traditional land-use and agriculture systems to encourage local people to develop and maintain a sustainable lifestyle. Our aim is to preserve the unique ecosystems of the Carpathian Mountain Region, connecting ecological preservation with economical possibilities in projects like ecotourism and marketing of local products.
Our main focus is the support of rare livestock breeding, as a foundation of environmental conservation. Not only the animal gene resources, but also ecosystems with high species diversity that depend on grazing can be preserved. We organize the Carpathian-Buffalo breeding in collaboration with the Carpathian-Biosphere Reserve and local farmers. Another project preserves the original Hutsul horses, of which some still show zebra stripes on the legs and an eel-line on the back.
Michel Jacobi is he Chairman and Finance-Manager of The initiative for saving of rare domestic animals in the Carpathian Mountains (Initiative zum Erhalt seltener Haustierrassen in den Karpaten e.V.).
