About us

“Bücherpiraten” was founded in Lübeck in 2002 with the aim of getting children and young people excited about stories and ensuring that literature becomes an integral part of their everyday life. With the Book Pirates, children and young people can get closer to the world of literature by reading, writing, performing and organizing and can put their own creative ideas into practice. In the children's and youth groups that take place regularly in the Children's Literature House, the children learn to work together as a team and to carry out responsibly their own projects on the subject of literature. The Book Pirates are also committed to promoting reading with several projects beyond the Children's Literature House.

The children's literature house is located in the old town house on Fleischhauerstr. 71 in Lübeck. The Book Pirates have set up rooms for children's and youth groups as well as an event room in the children's literature house. There, young people can try out their own event formats and carry out projects such as the Lübeck Youth Book Days. The Book Pirate Festival, a literature festival for children, also takes place there once a year.
On the ground floor of the Children's Literature House is the charity bookstore, where 40 volunteers sell donated books. The proceeds from the charity shop support the educational work in the Book Pirates' children and youth groups.

The Book Pirates' projects
The Book Pirates offer various groups for children, young people and adults, as well as further education programs, workshops and readings. In addition to the local offers for children and young people in Lübeck, there are the following national offers:
• 1001 Languages: Readers from all over the world agree: the first contact with the book should be in the mother tongue. But unfortunately there are very few bilingual picture books. We are changing that with our project “1001 Languages: bilingual-picturebooks.org”. On this website, reading promoters can upload stories from children that were created in workshops with artists. A network of volunteers translates the stories into 1001 languages. This means that people from anywhere can gradually download more and more stories in any two languages for free. The picture books with translations into, for example, Arabic, Tigrinya, English or Dari can be found at www.bilingual-picturebooks.org.
• Available - the solidarity-based small publisher for children's books, youth literature, non-fiction books and kamishibais
• “A book for every child” fundraising campaign
• “Bücherpiraten audio” is a small, independent label for audio books, founded by Book Pirates. We publish two titles every year as charity audio books.
