About us
ILAYS is a non-profit organisation, set up in 2004 by the East African community in West London.
Back in 2004, we saw that many of our brothers and sisters who arrived from Somalia and elsewhere were struggling to cope in the UK.
Making the transition can be tough, and we recognised that migrants, refugees and asylum seekers were in danger of feeling excluded, isolated or ignored. We felt something could be done to help them. So we set up ILAYS.
At ILAYS, our mission is to help BAME communities, migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in West London—and particularly those from East Africa—to reach their full potential and to feel empowered, confident, and included within society.
Since our founding, we have worked to:
• Support refugees and new arrivals to settle and integrate successfully in the UK.
• Promote education, employment, and citizenship skills among young people and adults.
• Strengthen mental health and wellbeing within the BAME community.
• Empower women and elevate their participation in society.
• Foster intercultural understanding, social cohesion, and shared values across communities.
• Offering a safe space for young people in the migrant, refugee, and asylum seeker community
• Provide awareness to help education in East Africa and encourage them, and negotiate to build a better life in their own country, and teach and train peacekeeping.
Our services include youth mentoring, employment support, health and wellbeing workshops, counselling, and community engagement initiatives. Through these programs, we aim to build bridges between communities and promote a stronger, more inclusive Britain.
Hassan Hussein is the Chief Executive of ILAYS.
