About us

CUWEDE COD LAB was formerly established as Community Uplift and Welfare Development (CUWEDE) in 2006, and registered as a Community Based Organization (CBO) with Nebbi District Local Government. In 2021, the organisation got incorporated as a company limited by guarantee under the Companies Act, 2012. At this point CUWEDE’s name was slightly modified to CUWEDE COD LAB as guided and approved by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) to meet the requirements for incorporation. In April 2024; it was then registered with National Bureau for Non-Governmental Organisations as a local NGO in Uganda.
The organization seeks to empower young people especially girls and women to realize their full-potential, worth and strengthen them politically, socially and economically through advocating for their alienable human rights.

To contribute to the enterprenual development of children and youth in Northern Uganda through creative, innovative and smart solutions to development challenges

Objectives:
• To encourage skills training, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship in all forms for sustainable livelihood of children and young people living in extreme vulnerabilities.
• To strengthen child and youth friendly environment characterized by open engagement on child rights, sexual and reproductive health, environment free of violence and support for improved service delivery at community at large.
• To increase support to children, youth and communities in the Northern Uganda to build resilience, engage public officials and institutions to respect civil liberties and be accountable for provision of quality and timely social services.
• To promote community led development initiatives in social service sectors with a special focus on social-economic marginalization in water and sanitation, agriculture, health, roads, as well as safety and protection needs of children and young people affected by conflicts, disasters and climate change
• To strengthen CUWEDE institutional status to effectively plan, fundraise and build a brand as a leading creative youth lab in Northern Uganda that serve as buildings blocks for the next generation of thinking entrepreneurs to thrive.

Activities:
• Vocational Education: Our vocational skills program is conducted annually in two (2) different cohorts’ sessions in the areas of tailoring and fashion design, leather and crafts, motorcycle repair, apiculture, carpentry, welding and hair dressing. We ensure that the program is conducted in a collaborative mode and ensures that, young people especially girls, young women and youth with disabilities get all relevant and necessary immediate skills support so as to have a better and dignified life.
• Child Protection: Promoting Child Rights through sensitization campaigns: CUWEDE COD LAB conducted child-led advocacy campaign on the rights of children with all stakeholders led by children and 2,345 had a chance to increase their awareness on child rights. The campaign on child rights aimed at creating awareness on the impacts of child abuse to children and how the stakeholders can join hands together to solve and stop the child abuse.; Strengthening the child protection awareness: CUWEDE COD LAB conducted a refresher training of community leaders, community members and community champions on their roles regarding child protection. The four days training in Erussi and Ndhew respectively aimed at reducing/preventing child abuse and its effect on the community.
• Sexual and Reproductive Health: In cooperation with Plan International Uganda and Nebbi District NGO Forum, CUWEDE COD LAB conducted training sessions on menstrual hygiene management and sexual and reproductive health for 150 girls and 75 boys in 5 public primary schools in Nebbi district; Building Skills and Supporting Girls: Intensive Training for Parent Enterprise Groups: 2 parents’ enterprise groups with 50 members received an intensive 10-day training on SRHR, honey processing skills. The groups were engaged to make dignity kits for distribution to girls. It helped the parents pay for their children’s school tuition fees. Through Training health workers and teachers, peer education programs, and development of educational materials, rampant early marriages and teenage pregnancies were reduced in Nebbi District; Girls’ empowerment clubs.
• WASH: Promoting community health through community water user committee which were and trained on their roles and responsibilities in ensuring proper drinking water supply, operations and maintenance of the available water sources; From awareness to action through sanitation and hygiene sensitization campaign: CUWEDE COD LAB conducted sensitization of the community on sanitation and hygiene aimed at increasing the awareness of the community and encouraging them to install in place sanitation and hygiene facilities in their homes. This increased awareness of the community thus installing hygiene and sanitation facilities like rubbish pits to ensure proper waste disposal, utensil drying racks and pit latrines for those that do not have in their homes.
• Environment: Greening Nebbi through tree planting
• Social Economy (Income Generation): CUWEDE COD LAB is working with the community members in providing the necessary capacity-building programs that aim at the establishment of social enterprises and training. Financial literacy training facilitated by CUWEDE COD LAB finance experts instilled vital money management skills, leading to improved savings culture and prudent spending habits among members
