About us
In 1994, some citizens of Leipzig founded a non-profit organization with the aim of building a new museum in Leipzig. The Phyllodrome - Museum and Institute for Rainforest Ecology had set itself the goal of establishing a scientific research and education facility dealing with the large ecosystem of the tropical rainforest. The concept was aimed at uniting zoological, botanical, ethnological and other scientific disciplines under one roof.
In the planned museum, the rainforest ecosystem was to be presented comprehensively, vividly and multifaceted, with the help of living animals and plants, original specimens, models, photos and modern multimedia systems. On 1 January 2001 we were able to open this museum in the Citizens' Meeting House in Wiederitzsch.
The Rainforest Museum Leipzig is a place of learning for natural and ethnological education. Our focus is on the tropical rainforest ecosystem, which is the habitat for a wide variety of animal and plant species.
We provide:
• Guided tours of the exhibition, lectures, film screenings
• Lessons for school classes and daycare groups
• Numerous interesting live animals (Boa constrictor, Green iguana, Frontal lobe basilisk, Tokeh etc.)
• Zoological, botanical and ethnographic collections
• Library and media database
• The main task of the institute is the development of a scientifically oriented nature and species protection: Specifically, this means: Members of Phyllodrome create ecological analyzes and species lists on the basis of field investigations or collected and evaluated material. Thus, the taxonomy (= science of naming the species), biogeography and ecology are some of the focal points of our work
Projects:
• PHYLLODROM's Kuper Range Reforestation Project in Papua New Guinea: members of PHYLLODROM launched a rainforest reforestation project in Papua New Guinea. In the field of Kuper range, and in cooperation with the local population, a large number of seedlings were planted from 19.1. - 28.2.2005. This project enables us to contribute to environmental protection and conduct accompanying research.
Bettina Grallert is the President of Phyllodrom – Museum and Institute für Rainforest Ecology
On request we can offer other net participants advice, give a presentation, and provide up-to-date information and contacts in the field of our work.
