About us

The "Ökologischer Ärztebund" German section of the ISDE (International Society of Doctors for the Environment) acts with the background knowledge that we are heading towards a deadly ecological collapse which makes a fundamental change in the way of thinking and acting necessary. The demand for more economic growth combined with the development of newer and newer extravagant technologies can only be fulfilled by a growing consumption of resources and waste production at the expenses of the environment. The consequences cannot only be read from the ecological system earth, but also its inhabitants who suffer as patients from newer and newer and threatening illnesses.

Due to the fact that medicine must always be future-oriented and socially binding and includes the responsibility for human health, the doctors of the "ÖÄB" feel particularly obliged to contribute to the solution of the environmental crisis. The objectives of the "ÖÄB" are to inform the population about dangers to health caused by the destruction of the environment, to demonstrate backgrounds and consequences, to analyze ecological disasters and traps, to show solutions, to recognize and prevent diseases caused by environmental conditions and to promote new thinking and acting. In the daily work with the patients, new ways shall be paved for individual rules of conduct. Medical-ecological contents must be anchored in the medical profession, in the organizations of the status of doctors, in medical research and the health services. The "ÖÄB" offers doctors to commit themselves in medicine, ecology and society instead of idly suppressing and burding oneself with guilt because of negligence in particular towards the following generations.

The "ÖÄB" is independent of other organizations. It is financed by membership subscriptions, promotional funds and donations. The association organizes an annual congress on ecological subjects and informs its members by the ecological doctors' paper "Arzt und Umwelt" (doctor and environment).

Jürgen Bilger, born in Hanau in 1950, has been working as a paediatrician since 1982. Since 1991, he has been working with the systemic family therapy, since 1995, he has also been dealing with environmental medicine. The commitment of the married father of three children is due to the movement of 1968 as well as the peace and ecological movement of the eighties. Since 1992, he has been a member of the board of directors of the "ÖÄB".

We offer overnight accommodations. Apart from that, we can also give expert advice for other net participants, give lectures, communicate up-to-date specialist information and arrange for contacts regarding the field of eco-psychology and environmental medicine.
