The Southern African Human Rights Non Governmental Organizations Network (SAHRINGON)- Tanzania Chapter is a private, voluntary, non-governmental and non- partisan network organization established in 1998 to ensure government implementation of its commitments under human rights instruments and other international instruments for realization of social development in the country.
SAHRINGON seeks to strengthen advocacy and human rights monitoring by working with its members and other human rights activists worldwide to provide a platform for discussion and advocacy challenges facing human rights and development in countries of Southern Africa.
SAHRINGON- Tanzania Chapter exists to improve the performance of its members in the promotion and protection of human rights through its capacity building, lobbying and advocacy, mobilization for collective action, coordination and monitoring implementation of human rights.
Objectives:
• To facilitate networking and collective actions among its member organizations in their endeavors in creation and advocacy for a culture of observing, supporting, respecting, defending, protecting and promotion of human rights in Tanzania and in other countries of Southern Africa.
• To network and collaborate with its members, other Chapters, governmental and Non- Governmental Organizations and other national and international partners having similar objectives.
• To defend, protect, safeguard, support and or stand for the rights, privileges, advantages, benefits and or entitlements that may be incidental of in connection with any of the members of the company within or outside the United Republic of Tanzania.
• To ensure adherence to good governance and observance of all the human rights as provided under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in other international human rights instruments and agreements.
• To build capacity of human rights organizations
• To establish and maintain an emergency response team to respond quickly to violations of human rights.
• To organize conferences, seminars, workshops, meetings and such other activities.
• To conduct human rights monitoring and research to determine human rights needs of people and identify issues involved and compile the findings and other necessary information necessary to deal with the issue.
• To provide expertise assistance and other support to members through training identification and analysis of legal and human rights problems, the design and evaluation of human rights programmes.
• To produce publications and awareness raising.
Over the years SAHRINGON -Tanzania Chapter has been involved in a number of major activities with some of them being:
• Coordinating and taking part in the Global Call to Action against Poverty, (GCAP) campaign, Social Watch consultative meetings and Public Expenditure Tracking System Survey (PETS).
• Launching a national awareness campaigns for abolition of death penalty in Tanzania by opening a strategic case at the High Court of Tanzania. The Network further conducted a survey to seek views from religious leaders, media, (TV) programmes and interventions on albino’s killings versus government’s statements and public opinions.
Armando Swenya is the Networking Officer of SAHRiNGON Tanzania Chapter.
For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, give an expert opinion, procure expert information and establish new contacts in the field of our work.
