Sobre nosotros
On 11th September 2001, the terrorist attacks on the New York Twin Towers shook the world. One result was the growth of public resentment – against foreign cultures and unfortunately against religions, too. The way the artist RegineHeygster reacted to the events was based on a clear internal impulse: she wanted to make a stand by focussing on something which people of all religions wish for – peace. She had the idea of building a tunnel, incorporating various religious symbols. This would stand for peaceful cooperation betwen the religions in Bremen and symbolise a passageway “from darkness into light”. People of Bremen - Christians, Muslems, Alevites. Buddhists, Hindus and and those of the Baha’i faith – would thereby have a symbol of peace and reconciliation.
The artist launched her initiative at the beginning of 2002. The society “Peace tunnel – Bremen makes a stand” was founded in the following year, with the aim of presenting the pubic with an encouraging and tangible sign of understanding and togetherness between different cultures and religions. One special aspect of the society is that the founding members come from six different religious groups.
The Rembertitunnel, in Bremen city centre, is to be turned into a symbol of peaceful cooperation by means of the mosaic peace-trees created by the artist. When it is completed, each religious group that has taken part in the project will be presented with a symbol and a quotation from their holy scriptures.
Activities
The society focusses more on integration and the community than on theological debate.
• we organise cultural events based on peace, tolerance and understanding.
• we offer opportunities to find out more about other religions and lifestyles. These include, for example, the annual podium and informative series “Peace in practice” in the fireside room of the Bremen City Hall, as well as events where groups can learn more about each other, called “Religions welcome you”.
• With the annual school project “Peace begins early” the society encourages interreligious dialogue in Bremen schools and kindergartens.
• The society publishes its news, such as actions, building plans and events, in the “Tunnel Echo”. In addition, the project gives press releases and advertises its events in the local media and on its homepage.
On request we can offer other net participants advice, give a presentation and provide up to date information and contacts in the field of our work.
