Sobre nosotros
Volunteer International Community Development Africa (VICDA) is a Non-Government Organization (NGO, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, that was established by a local woman, Irene Wairimu Ngatia, in 2004.
VICDA was founded with the goal of helping needy Kenyans with the assistance of international volunteers in various development projects ranging from schools to hospitals to counseling programs.
Projects:
• HIV/AIDS Counseling Projects: The HIV/AIDS counseling projects take place both in counseling centers as well as home visits. Counselors going on home visits take “home care kits”
• IDP ((Internally Displaced Persons) Community Projects: VICDA is passionate about helping these people through various community projects including water projects, agriculture and farming projects, medical centers and schools.
• Maasai Community Projects: VICDA is committed to assisting the lack of clean water in form of drilling water wells, building of dams and water piping. VICDA is also erecting sanitation structures and educating the community about the need for better sanitation initiatives. Recently, VICDA dug a borehole in the Amboseli area of Maasailand. VICDA also supports the rights of Maasai women and girls by rescuing them from early marriages and female genital mutilation. VICDA is also committed to supporting the education of Maasai school children.
• Medical Projects: Healthcare is a big challenge to the Kenyan community. A high population have no access to medical care due to distance between hospitals and the costs associated. VICDA is determined to help this problem by hosting medical camps in rural and severely impoverished areas and introducing volunteers with medical backgrounds to various projects in need of assistance. VICDA is constructing a brand new medical center and hospital at the Giwa Farm IDP Camp in Rongai. The hospital will serve over 5,000 IDP’s and members of the surrounding community who currently do not have access to affordable healthcare.
• Orphanage Projects: VICDA currently helps to sponsor 30 orphanages, a number that is growing quickly. By supporting these orphanages, VICDA commits to sponsoring the children’s education, empowering the projects through micro finance projects and placing volunteers to support the staff by assisting with childcare.
• School Projects: VICDA is very active in building schools in various parts of the country, especially in the areas that were affected by post election violence in late 2007.
Irene Wairimu Ngatia is the Founder and Executive Director of Volunteer International Community Development Africa (VICDA).
