The Africa School Assistance Project (ASA), founded in 2008, is an US based NGO and also an NGO registered with the Government of the Republic of Tanzania. ASAP is committed to increasing access to quality public education in East Africa, especially for girls. Because education, more than any other sector of development, seeds dramatic improvement in poverty reduction, gender equality, health outcomes, child immunization, HIV/AIDS prevention, environmental protection and wildlife conservation. Simply put, widely available public education will lead to a prosperous, peaceful and sustainable future for Africa.
ASAP has chosen to focus on Tanzania because it struggles with one of the worst education systems in East Africa. Our solution is to systematically develop community schools and provide comprehensive support for girls in rural regions of Tanzania who face a dismal future without an education.
We build strong partnerships with the villagers and government in every community where we work. Our model is predicated on community ownership and project sustainability. Our work is scalable and replicable to maximize impact in the greatest number of places. And, we work hard to ensure everything we do is efficient, effective and culturally appropriate.

ASAP has three important initiatives that help achieve our mission.
• Community School Development: ASAP develops community schools (primary and secondary) in rural Tanzania for the purpose of expanding access to quality education. We have a holistic approach to school development, meaning that we aim to provide each school with the facilities needed to enable the students and teachers to thrive. Most of our schools include classrooms, teacher’s offices, toilets & hand washing stations, water systems, solar power (where appropriate), playing fields, kitchens and teacher’s housing.
• Kupanda Project for Girls (A Replicable Model to Improve Secondary School Completion Rates in Rural Tanzanian Communities): ASAP created The Kupanda Project for Girls, a replicable model to increase secondary school graduation rates for girls in rural Tanzania to 80% or higher. The project supports girls in all aspects of their lives so they can personally thrive and succeed in school.
• Volunteering To Support Schools: ASAP leads groups of American volunteers to work on our school projects each summer to create a cross-cultural understanding between Americans and Africans. We believe the “ripple effect” of these trips will have long-lasting implications for the world.
