Humanitarian Agency For Community Initiative (HACI) is a National Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and nonprofit making humanitarian and developmental organization that was formed voluntarily by a group of various professionals residing in Juba to support conflict affected communities in South Sudan to address issues concerning women, youth and the vulnerable groups of population. HACI acquired its legal status as a National Non-Government Organization (NNGO) with its Constitution in 2018.
HCI envisions a healthy, productive and prosperous community void of violence
Our mission is to empower communities by improving access to education, health, water and sanitation, peace building and to ensure women and youth empowerment and engagement in social and economic recovery programs.
Thematic areas:
• Education: HACI advocates for Girl-child education while promoting retention in schools, capacity built primary school teachers and support adult literacy including vulnerable boy child education.
• Peace building and good governance: HACI supports conflict management, conflict analysis, mediation, reconciliation and forgiveness. This is done through promotion of civic education, enhancing access to justice and championing Human Rights awareness. The organization also creates awareness on and supports social accountability.
• Protection: This thematic area employs holistic frame work to create an environment that promotes full respect for rights of individuals with special consideration for vulnerable groups of people like children, girls, women and the elderly. It also responds to the protection needs of women, girls, children and the elderly who are victims of violence and abuse. Key areas are; child protection against abuses and exploitation, Gender-based Violence and psychosocial care services, trauma healing and democracy by incorporating the element of Age Gender Diversity Mainstreaming (AGDM). HACI is also reaching participants with Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Positive Discipline in Every Day’s Parenting (PDEP), and Human Rights trainings, as well as offering psychosocial and emotional counseling to victims of abuses.
• Food security and Livelihood: HACI builds the capacity of women, men and youths in business skills through training and empowering them economically to start different sorts of business ventures of their choices. The participants are trained in Smart farming skills, Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) and Selection, planning and management of income generating activities. These enhances socio-economic empowerment and peaceful coexistence and for sustainable and more reliable community. HACI also focuses on employing Agricultural Production Practices as a way of developing a sustainable food production that also promotes environmental protection, conservation and management.
• WASH: HACI advocates for the implementation of safe water chain system with interventions aimed at saving lives and reducing communicable illness through access to safe and clean water, adequate sanitation and improved hygiene. This is to foster clean and healthy environment. To achieve the above, the organization encourages digging of pit latrines, personal hygiene practices such as hand washing, community sensitization and maintaining of water points by the users and the Water Management Committees.
• Health and nutrition; HACI promotes Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) by mobilizing community and encouraging mothers to undertake immunization for their personal health and that of their children. This is done in order to minimize the risk of six killer diseases so as to reduce child mortality rate. Data on family planning, HIV/AIDS, nutrition-related ailments and diseases are collected and disseminated.
• Animal Husbandry & Nutrition: HACI supports the promotion of animal health, breeding, feeding and nutrition. It also supports the development of veterinary care services to prevent and mitigate pest and disease. The organization also supports the development of Indexed-based Livestock Insurance (IBLI) in partnership with other donors to cushion farmers against shocks such as drought and floods.
• Disasters Risk Reduction & Emergency Relief: HACI builds community capacities to respond to disasters and emergencies efficiently .The organization effectively uses indigenous knowledge and local community resources to build resilient communities towards multiple human-made and natural hazards.
