The non-profit Myanmar Foundation was established in 2000 by Jürgen von Jordan, who worked professionally in Thailand and Myanmar (formerly Burma) for decades. Jürgen von Jordan passed away in July 2025. The future of the Foundation is secure, and the Myanmar Foundation’s Advisory Board is continuing to manage its projects. Since its establishment, the Foundation has been able to carry out a considerable number of projects in Myanmar.

The Myanmar Foundation is a private, non-political organisation. The foundation is managed by DSZ-Deutsches Stiftungszentrum GmbH, one of Germany’s leading foundation management companies.

The aim of the Myanmar Foundation is to support, in particular, projects in the fields of child and youth welfare and public health through financial and in-kind contributions.

Projects:
• Orphanages/sponsorships: The Myanmar Foundation supports several orphanages. In Myanmar, orphanages are run not only by the state but also by Buddhist monasteries or church-run institutions. The basic needs of a child include: accommodation and food; clothing, school fees and basic medical care.
• Whispering Seed: Whispering Seed is an NGO registered in the USA which is involved in youth work, education and training, and has been active in South-East Asia since 2004. Sprouting Seeds Café, Bakery & Eco Shop Training Centre:
This training centre for teenagers and young adults comprises a café, a bakery and a small shop. There, young people in and around Kalaw, Shan State, are given the opportunity to receive training and education in a wide variety of areas (including cooking, baking, English and computer classes). Internships are also offered in Kalaw, with programmes lasting from 3 to 12 months for young people from remote regions and diverse ethnic groups. Whispering Earth Sustainability Training Centre: The Whispering Earth Sustainability Training Centre is situated not far from Kalaw. This newly established training and education centre offers the NGO extensive opportunities for its work. Together with a network of over 2,000 Buddhist monastery schools and Kachin teachers, it provides support and advice on holistic education, curriculum development for early childhood education, as well as practical support in everyday life (e.g. courses and assistance with building houses from bamboo and earth, and soap and shampoo production). In addition, techniques for improved organic vegetable and rice cultivation are being developed in collaboration with local farmers, and this knowledge is passed on to young people.
The project has been supported since 2016 by our advisory board member Jan-Philipp Sendker and was officially taken over by the Myanmar Foundation in 2019.
• Myitta Kyaemone (House of Love): Kawthaung: Over the past few years, a large orphanage and two smaller facilities have been built here, providing accommodation for around 30 children and young people. Some of them are HIV-positive. Since 2016, Sister Martha has been working to bring Burmese street children living in Thailand back to Myanmar. There are thousands of them in Thailand; their parents, mostly migrant workers, are either dead, in prison or have abandoned their children. Working closely with the Thai authorities, Sister Martha is striving to return them to their Burmese homeland. Sister Martha’s project has been supported by our advisory board member Jan-Philipp Sendker since 2016 and was officially taken over by the Myanmar Foundation in 2019.
• Schools: Since its inception, the Myanmar Foundation has built and supported 9 primary schools, 36 lower secondary schools and 7 upper secondary schools in the Bagan region of central Myanmar. The regular support and management of the school projects was transferred in 2015 to the Life Foundation, which focuses on school projects.
