Sobre nosotros

Learning to Live Together was founded in 1980 on the initiative of a group of parents of mentally handicapped children. At that time it was run in conjunction with the Open Handicapped Work (OBA) of Evangelical Youth in Munich. Members met regularly to exchange ideas and for leisure activities.

They wanted their children, regardless of age, to grow up and live within their families, as fully-fledged members of society. They should have the chance of a full life, as far as their handicap would allow.

Aims:
• Developing and sponsoring provisions that are openly available for people with and without handicap.
• Mentoring the mentally or multiply handicapped so that they can take part in the life of the community.
• Offering respite for the carers of handicapped family members.
• Developing integral alternatives to residential Homes.
• Advising and supporting in questions of legal rights.
• Furthering integral leisure activities.

After the start-up of the family respite service in 1988, the first integral living community was founded in 1989, with 5 mentally handicapped and 4 non-handicapped individuals sharing accommodation.

Activities:
• Residential communities: today GLL runs eight such living-communities in the Munich urban districts of Am Hart, Großhadern, Neuhausen, Perlach and Riem as well as in Gräfelfing and Gröbenzell, of which two are for ageing handicapped people.
• Non-residential service: having a handicapped family member changes that family's life. Their care and upbringing demands a great deal of devotion, energy and endurance. GLL's non-residential service provides advice, supervision, participation, care, respite, classroom assistance.
• a network project encouraging handicapped youths to take part in the leisure pursuits of “normal” youngsters is run together with other organisations under the title of "Munich for all".
. A further two residential communities are beeing planned.

Rudi Sack is the president of GLL.
