Green Generation Initiative (GGI) is a non-profit youth-led organization creating a generation of environmentally conscious individuals by educating and empowering children and communities to love nature through experiential learning and on-ground nature-based solutions. The Green Generation Initiative, founded in 2016 by the inspiring Kenyan environmentalist Elizabeth Wathuti, embodies a profound commitment to combatting pressing global environmental challenges.

What we do:
• The initiative has since expanded its focus to mentoring young children to be climate conscious, establishing food forests in school, carrying out environmental education to school children, planting trees for birthdays and special occasions, capacity building and eco projects for communities, and creating awareness on climate change to the general public.
• We run programs focused on tree growing to help schools in Kenya establish green spaces in their compounds, instill an environmental culture amongst students, and address food insecurity amongst school-going children from the harvested fruits.
• We also enable communities to implement nature-based solutions to adapt to the climate crisis while propelling their socio-economic transformation through fruit orchards.

Our programs:
• Greening Schools: GGI creates green spaces within school compounds for restoration and revegetation needs. The green spaces have multifaceted impact, enhancing fruit nutrition, improving aesthetics, positively influencing students mental health, and contributing to enhancing student performance.
• Fruit Trees For Schools: The current project is the “Fruit Trees for Schools” project. The project aims to plant 5,000 fruit and indigenous trees in 10 schools across Nairobi and Nyeri Counties. The objectives of the project include greening schools for climate change adaptation and mitigation, providing students with hands-on conservation skills, and offering nutritious value through the fruits produced.
• Environmental Education and Awareness Creation – Eco Clubs: Through targeted awareness campaigns, workshops, and educational initiatives, we aim to raise consciousness about pressing environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Our environmental education programs are designed to be inclusive, accessible, and engaging, catering to diverse audiences ranging from school children to adults. We employ interactive learning methodologies, hands-on activities, and multimedia resources to make complex environmental concepts relatable and comprehensible.
• Environmental Advocacy: Environmental advocacy involves raising awareness, mobilizing public support, and engaging with decision-makers to promote policies and actions that protect and preserve the natural world. Within our organization, environmental advocacy takes various forms, including grassroots campaigns, lobbying efforts, and strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations and stakeholders. We aim to amplify the voices of communities affected by environmental degradation, ensuring that their concerns are heard and addressed by policymakers and industry leaders.
• Community Fruit Trees Orchards for triple-bottom-line Planet, People and Profit.: GGI collaborates with local communities, particularly women, providing fruit tree seedlings for cultivation through the Fruit Trees Orchard Cooperatives movement. This initiative aims for a triple bottom-line impact: restoring tree cover and establishing long-term carbon credit schemes (Planet), fostering social cooperatives to build local environmental ambassadors (People), and engaging in fair trade fruit marketing to enhance community livelihoods (Profit).
• Score for Nature: Recognizing the universal appeal and influence of sports, we leverage this platform to engage individuals and communities in environmental action while simultaneously fostering a sense of camaraderie, teamwork, and healthy competition. Through Score for Nature, we organize various sporting events, tournaments, and challenges with an environmental twist. These events may include activities such as eco-friendly marathons, beach clean-up soccer matches, tree-planting relay races, or cycling tours to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire action.
• Ecosystems Restoration Project: Ecosystem restoration reflects our commitment to conserving and rehabilitating degraded ecosystems for biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability. As part of our efforts, we have adopted two acres of Oloolua forest for restoration, recognizing its importance as a vital ecosystem in need of protection. Through this initiative, we have already planted over 400 indigenous trees, contributing to the regeneration of the forest and enhancing its ecological integrity. Our focus on ecosystem restoration aligns with our broader mission to promote holistic approaches to environmental conservation and stewardship.
